The Dutch Volkskrant Magazine features an interview with Stefano Boeri by Kirsten Hannema about the inspirations behind the design philosophy of Stefano Boeri Architetti and the projects under construction in the Netherlands, especially Wonderwoods Vertical Forest, currently under construction in Utrecht.
From Jane Goodall to Rem Koolhaas to the Bosco Verticale in Milan, Stefano Boeri retraces some important stages of his design experience, focusing on the projects of Trudo Vertical Forest, completed in 2021 in Eindhoven, and, above all, Wonderwods Vertical Forest.
Developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and MVSA Architects, the Wonderwoods project aims to create an advanced experience of cohabitation between the city and living nature in the centre of Utrecht, within the new Healthy Urban Quarter. The project includes an unprecedented declination of the Vertical Forest, 105 metres high and capable of housing about 200 flats of various types and for different users: mainly young professionals, workers and families. The tower will house about 50,000 plants of 30 different species on its façades, equivalent to the vegetation of one hectare of forest.
However, the presence of 360 trees and 9,640 shrubs and flowers also describes the reality of a highly sustainable tower, capable of absorbing approximately 5.4 tonnes of CO2 annually at full capacity, as well as a significant amount of fine dust (sodium microparticulate). Thanks to the filtering action performed by the leaves, it is also calculated that the microclimate that can be produced on the terraces can activate a significant reduction in the temperature range between the outside and the inside of the flats, with a proportional reduction in energy conditioning costs.
