The second issue of 2025 of the German magazine Umweltzeitung, titled Building and Environment, features an image of the Bosco Verticale, a project by Boeri Studio in Milan, on its cover.
This issue of the magazine is dedicated to architecture and ecology, with in-depth analyses on eco-friendly construction, low-emission building materials, light pollution, and CO₂ emissions. It chooses the Bosco Verticale as a symbolic image in response to these themes.
The concept of the Bosco Verticale, described as “a home for trees that also hosts humans and birds,” defines not only its urban and technological characteristics but also the architectural language and expressive qualities of the project. Formally, the towers are distinguished by their large, staggered, and deeply cantilevered balconies (about three meters), designed to accommodate the perimeter planters for vegetation and allow the unhindered growth of large trees, spanning up to three floors of the building.
Throughout the seasons, variations in the colors and shapes of the plant structure create a dynamic landmark, highly recognizable even from a distance. This characteristic has quickly made the Bosco Verticale a new symbol of Milan. This principle of variation also applies to the different treatments on the sides of the towers and across the various floors, where the selection and distribution of plant species follow both aesthetic criteria and functional considerations, adapting to the orientations and heights of the façades.
