On Saturday, June 1st, during an episode of Linea Verde Discovery, a program focused on Italian territories and environmental, architectural, and historical heritage, Livia Shamir, Director of the Research Department of Stefano Boeri Architetti, presents the Parco Italia project. This proposal by Stefano Boeri Architetti and AlberItalia aims to extend urban forestry to 15 metropolitan areas (Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Messina, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Turin, Venice).
This initiative envisions creating a large unified system that will lead to the planting of over 22 million new trees within a few years, approximately one tree for each inhabitant of the 15 cities.
The basic concept of the Plan starts from the idea of treating the forest, and more specifically the trees, as full-fledged inhabitants, not just distant guests relative to our reality, thereby fostering a new alliance between forests and the city.
The project particularly includes a unified design of the ecological corridor network, with the definition of both design and management guidelines for the network of forests and green areas through the establishment of a dedicated foundation. This foundation would emerge from dialogue between the public sector (ministries, institutions, regional administrations) and the private sector (professional firms, companies, associations). A fundamental aspect is indeed the definition of integrated governance models to facilitate regulations and funding, combined with the research of applied techniques and technologies aimed at creating urban forests.
