In an article published in Lampoon Magazine, Carlo Mazzoni talks about the citizens’ manifesto ‘Milano Città Giardino’, a vision of transforming the city of Milan into a vast urban garden, emphasising the importance of trees as a central element of the urban landscape, using the example of the Vertical Forest (Boeri Studio) in the Porta Nuova district.

The ‘Milan Garden City’ initiative invites citizens to consider public spaces as extensions of their own gardens, encouraging the planting of trees and plants along streets, squares and buildings. Milan’s trees will teach us how to live together. Milan Garden City is a civic affair,’ says Carlo Mazzoni.

The Vertical Forest is the prototype of a new architecture of biodiversity that focuses not only on man but also on his relationship with other species. The first case built consists of two towers, 80 and 112 metres high, which together contain vegetation equivalent to 30,000 square metres of forest and undergrowth, concentrated on 3,000 square metres of urban area.

The project is also an effective means of combating urban sprawl, which is often caused by the search for green spaces. As Carlo Mazzoni points out, Bosco Verticale aims to serve as an inspirational model for architects and engineers, inviting them to rethink the combination of nature and architecture.
