In the Pianeta 2030 special edition of Corriere della Sera, cartoonist Luigi Segre publishes Io Sono Albero, a comic from the “Io Sono…” series that features the Parco Italia project. This initiative, proposed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and AlberItalia, is inspired by the broader Green Urban Oases reforestation project—developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti in collaboration with the FAO and other research institutions—which aims to create ecological corridors connecting 90 cities from Africa to Central Asia.
The comic follows various urban flora and fauna characters as they explore different projects designed to enhance livability and biodiversity in urban environments. One of the highlighted interventions is Parco Italia, which focuses on natural benefits such as providing shade, producing oxygen, and absorbing CO2 and fine particulate matter.
The project aims to extend urban reforestation to the 15 metropolitan areas (Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Messina, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Turin, Venice), connecting them through green corridors with the Apennine range and the Alpine system, creating a unified infrastructure across the entire peninsula. This would result in the planting of over 22 million new trees within a few years—approximately one tree for every resident of the 15 cities. If expanded to metropolitan areas with populations over 15,000, the total could reach 60 million trees.
