In an interview with Il Tirreno by Alessandro Pattume, Stefano Boeri addresses the issue of the future of Tuscany’s historic centres, which are currently characterised by ‘tourism, depopulation and neglect’.
Among the strategies suggested for the ‘’treatment‘’ of Tuscany’s historic centres, Stefano Boeri underlines the importance of ‘’diversifying the attractiveness of historic centres as much as possible‘’.
As Boeri states: ‘Tuscany does not only have Florence, Lucca and Pisa. On the Apennine mountain range it has dozens of historic centres of remarkable value, each with outstanding works of art and admirable squares from an urbanistic point of view. […] That kind of world is the future of Italy: we cannot forget that by investing in that world we could really regenerate the whole country’.
Among other challenges, Stefano Boeri highlights three other critical issues to be addressed: social inequalities, which are strongly growing especially within cities; the ecological transition, a concern that involves all citizens and must, therefore, be a project to improve life; and artificial intelligence, along with what it brings from the point of view of decisions, knowledge and information on the city.
‘Cities for the future, or rather cities of the future, are the existing cities on which we design the future today’.
