Bosco Verticale su Habitante

Habitante publishes an article dedicated to the benefits of integrating living nature with architecture, particularly focusing on green roofs, citing Boeri Studio’s Bosco Verticale as a virtuous example of this typology.

Green roofs provide numerous ecological and social benefits, such as reducing air pollution, offering thermal insulation that is linked to energy savings, and the ability to absorb and retain rainwater. This contributes to reducing the risk of flooding and decreasing the amount of water that ends up in urban drainage systems, alleviating the pressure on existing infrastructures. Additionally, green roofs create habitats for many species of plants, insects, and birds, thereby promoting biodiversity in densely populated urban areas.

Alongside examples from Japan, the UK, and Singapore, Milan’s Bosco Verticale is the only Italian example mentioned. The two towers, standing at 80 and 112 meters tall, collectively host 800 trees (480 large and medium-sized trees, 300 smaller trees), 15,000 perennials and groundcover plants, and 5,000 shrubs. This vegetation is equivalent to 30,000 square meters of woodland and undergrowth, concentrated on a 3,000 square meter urban surface. Unlike “mineral” facades made of glass or stone, the vegetal screen of the Bosco Verticale neither reflects nor amplifies solar rays but filters them, creating a welcoming internal microclimate without harmful environmental effects. At the same time, the green curtain regulates humidity, produces oxygen, and absorbs CO2 and fine dust particles.
