On the occasion of the awarding of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Stefano Boeri during the Madrid Design Festival 2023, the Spanish magazine Diseño Interior carries out an interview reviewing the pivotal projects of his architectural career, starting with the Bosco Verticale in Milan, conceived by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca, Giovanni La Varra) as a prototype building for a new architecture of biodiversity.
The interview opens with the main influences behind Stefano Boeri Architetti’s identity design philosophy, the obsession with trees, nature and its incorporation as an integral and not only aesthetic part of architecture.
The main projects developed by the studio as a reworking of the Vertical Forest typology are then described: from the examples in China, in Huanggang and Nanjing, to the first vertical forest in social housing in Eindhoven – up to the visions of forestation in arid climates, an essential challenge for the urban future.
The article concludes with some interventions related to the relationship with the built environment, such as the Roman projects for the new access to the Domus Aurea and Quattro Volte, in the Ancient Theatre in the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, underlining the studio’s efforts ranging from a broader to a more specialised design scale.
