The documentary Sala 5 – Raphael’s Cartoon is finalist in the Documentary section at the Tropea Film Festival 2024. The second edition of the festival takes place from September 8 to 14, animating various locations and historic venues in the city: from Palazzo Santa Chiara to the Antico Sedile dei Nobili, from Piazza Cannone to the Affaccio Raf Vallone, to the area of the Scoglio di Santa Maria dell’Isola, where the three final evenings and the award ceremony for the works in the competition will take place.
The documentary Sala 5 (produced by The Blink Fish; executive producer: Paolo Soravia; filming and editing: Stefano Santamato), crosses the threshold of the museum’s imposing entrance to discover a unique work of art: the “Raphael Cartoon,” an enormous preparatory drawing for The School of Athens, a fresco created by Raphael Sanzio for the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palaces (now Vatican Museums).
The installation for Raphael’s work, created by Stefano Boeri Architetti in 2019 maintains elements of continuity with Luigi Caccia Dominioni’s previous installations from the 1960s and Griffini’s from the 1990s, including the position of the Cartone in the West wall and a filter wall before the work’s arrival, while radically changing the way it is perceived.
The exhibition layout design, beginning from the approach to the large Cardboard, are designed to prepare the audience for the viewing of a work that retains – intact – within itself an admirable conjunction of meanings, being at once a finished work and yet destined to prepare a concluding work.
