At the XIII Architectural Biennale in Venice, Russia presents the “i-citi/i-land” exposition dedicated to the Skolkovo innovative town project. The pavilion well expresses the important collaboration between many international and russian architects in the Skolkovo project.
Skolkovo is an Innovation City, a modern Russian Silicon Valley rising 18 km from the centre of Moscow. A sophisticated and advanced platform, the meeting point of research, entrepreneurship and innovation in the field of information, medicine, energy-efficiency, nuclear and space technologies. The russian pavilion catches these intersections through an original concept using the QR code. Hundreds of QR code reveals the different work and design stages of the on-going Skolkovo project.
Stefano Boeri architetti and Project Meganom are working together in the D4 district.
Get lost inside the pavilion to discover the project.
Exposition design: SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov.
Project manager Marina Kuznetskaya, architect Agnia Sterligova
Fabrication and installation of the exhibition: Igor Chichikov, Velko 2000
D4 DISTRICT – Stefano Boeri Architetti and Project Meganom
The zone towards the east was jointly commissioned to Stefano Boeri Architetti and the Moscow-based studio Project Meganom.
From the onset the project was approached with the idea to create an urban tissue that allowed for a variety of lifestyles, forms of aggregation and qualities of public, semipublic and private spaces. A space that allowed the unexpected, the garage ferment of Silicon Valley together with the customized and organized comfort of Masdar.
The organization of strips, of different densities and functions, that line up perpendicularly to a central boulevard (the spinal cord that connects the different districts), is modulated on a combination of the relation between open and closed spaces, shadow lines that guarantee sunlight during most of the year, and the streets and squares that can be used both during the summer when the surrounding landscape flourishes and in winter when everything is covered with a thick blanket of snow. The result is a master plan that finds its harmony in a sequence of differences that begins in the southern most part with a large square that contains service and leisure activities and, through a series of strips of different density, intertwines with a park – in part preexisting – to merge into the city. To the north the scheme is completed with a large transport hub; an intermodal node for the exchange of transport systems that in Skolkovo will be public, by bicycle, pedestrian or, if individual, in the form of electric cars.
Design team:
Stefano Boeri Architetti (Stefano Boeri, Michele Brunello), Project Meganom (Yuri Grigorian),
Francesca Cesa Bianchi (project leader), Marco Giorgio, Corrado Longa
Collaborators: Alessandro Agosti, Giulia Dogliotti, Salah El Din Fahmy, Chiara Geroldi, Stefano Grigoletto, Francesca Motta, Hana Narvaez, Angelo Renna, Yibo Xu
