The documentary Sala 5 – Raphael Cartoon, a short film realised by The Blink Fish (executive producer: Paolo Soravia; filming and editing: Stefano Santamato), is finalist at the International Fest Roma Film Corto, taking place from 5 to 7 December in Roma at the Casa del Cinema.

The intervention of the new room maintains elements of continuity with Luigi Caccia Dominioni’s previous installations from the 1960s and Griffini’s from the 1990s, including the position of the Cartoon in the west wall and a filter wall before the arrival of the work, while radically changing the way it is perceived.

The Cartoon made by Raphael is the largest ever survived (2.85 metres by 804 centimetres), and arrived at the Ambrosiana in 1610 only to return, after various sales and vicissitudes, in the 1960s.

After a four-year restoration period, the preparatory Cartoon for the fresco of the School of Athens is back on display after extensive and laborious work coordinated by internationally renowned experts, university poles and restoration centres. The new auditorium, open to the public from 27 March 2019, is conceived to host Raphael’s preparatory work, and all of the set-up choices, starting with the sequences approaching the great Cartone, are designed to prepare the public for the vision of a work that retains within itself an admirable conjunction of meanings, being at the same time a finished work and yet destined to prepare a concluding work.

The short film ‘Sala 5 – Raphael Cartoon’ is being screened on 5 December 2024, at 18:50, at the Casa del Cinema in Roma.
