The article by Gavin Haines published in Positive News highlights 25 positive developments in 2024; among them, the improvement of liveability in the city, where the Wonderwoods Vertical Forest project is chosen as a symbol of the transformation of cities towards ecological transition.
Developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and MVSA Architects, the Wonderwoods project aims to create in the centre of Utrecht, within the new Healthy Urban Quarter, an advanced experience of cohabitation between the city and living nature.
The project includes an unprecedented declination of the Vertical Forest, 105 metres high and capable of housing about 200 flats of various types and for different users: mainly young professionals, workers and families.
The tower will house about 50,000 plants of 30 different species on its façades, equivalent to the vegetation of a hectare of forest: a true urban ecosystem, capable of producing about 41 tonnes of oxygen every year.
On the ground floor, connected to a garden on the sixth level, is the Vertical Forest Hub: a documentation and research centre on urban forestation in the world.
Also enriched by office areas, fitness and yoga studios, bicycle parking and public and recreational spaces, the Vertical Forest Wonderwoods aims to be Utrecht’s new wellness hub.
