Construction work is moving forward on the Memorial dedicated to the 43 victims of the Morandi Bridge collapse, for which Stefano Boeri Architetti has been appointed as artistic direction. A place of respect and remembrance, of testimony and exposing, the Memoriale 14.08.2018 and the adjacent Polcevera embankment gardens are built near the former Pile 9 of the Morandi Bridge, an emblematic location in memory of the August 14, 2018 tragedy.
The building, designed by the team of Stefano Boeri Architetti (project group: Marco Giorgio, Sara Gangemi, Anastasia Kucherova, and Daniele Barillari) constitutes the first core of the project for the Polcevera Park, developed in collaboration with Metrogramma, Inside Outside, and Studio Laura Gatti, which aims at the reconstruction, from an architectural and urban but above all social point of view, of an extremely diverse territory: a quality rebirth in terms of forms and services, designed especially for the people who live and work there, after the tragedy of August 14, 2018.
The Memoriale 14.08.2018 has been envisioned as a place of mourning and at the same time a place of hope, composed of both private and collective spaces: the House of Families; the Museum of Memory; the Bioclimatic Greenhouse, a botanical regeneration space; and the Meeting Point that concludes the visitors’ tour.
