On Tuesday September 12th at 6.30 p.m. at the Triennale di Milano, the book L’invenzione di Milano Culto della comunicazione e politiche urbane (Cronopio, 2023) by Lucia Tozzi ia presented, with interventions by Stefano Boeri and Nina Bassoli, curator for Architecture, urban regeneration and the city of Triennale Milano.
The book analyses the changes and transformations undergone by the Lombard capital over the last 10 years, with the watershed Expo 2015 as the trigger for a process of image change, from a productive, elegant but grey city into a shining and attractive metropolis.
The transition is not the consequence of an objective transformation but, on the contrary, it is the physical metamorphosis that is the effect of an unprecedented marketing campaign, the success of which has been achieved by shifting material and intellectual resources intended for the production of culture, research, welfare services towards the production of the image of a global metropolis of luxury. The most perturbing aspect of the entire process is the role played by finance, engaged in a dual mission: concentration of wealth through the privatisation of the public city, its spaces and its social and cultural institutions; capture or neutralisation of the forces that could produce friction in the system and fight against inequalities
