Nanjing Vertical Forest, a project by Stefano Boeri Architetti located in the Nanjing Pukou District of Nanjing, China, has been selected among the 31 finalists for the International High-Rise Award 2024/25.
The projects were chosen over the past 2 years from more than 1000 new towers in 14 different countries, selected for exemplary sustainability, exterior design, and internal spatial quality, as well as social and urban aspects. Other criteria include innovative construction technology and cost-effectiveness. The winner will be announced in November.
Nanjing Vertical Forest is Stefano Boeri Architetti’s second Vertical Forest in China, following the Easyhome Huanggang Vertical Forest project built in Huanggang in 2021. Modeled after the Vertical Forest, the two towers comprising the complex feature alternating balconies and green basins on the facade, hosting over 800 trees: specifically, 600 large trees, 200 medium-sized trees, and over 2,500 shrubs and cascading plants, covering an area of 4,500 square meters. The project is designed to host a true forest, contributing to the regeneration of local biodiversity through the planting of 27 native species.
Nanjing Vertical Forest represents an advancement in the adaptability of the Vertical Forest typology, which includes several examples in different climate zones, each addressing specific needs. In line with the characteristics of the typology, the Chinese project proposes a new form of integration between architecture and living nature and a new way of imagining cities. By combining responses to pollution reduction and the concentration of significant green space with minimal land use, Stefano Boeri Architetti’s project for Nanjing aligns with the urban forestry policy aimed at improving city life and community well-being.
