On Sunday 15 December, at 10.30 a.m., the inauguration ceremony of the Memorial dedicated to the 43 victims of the Morandi bridge collapse – developed by the team led by Stefano Boeri Architetti – will take place.
The programme includes speeches by various public and institutional figures: the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, on behalf of the Prime Minister’s Office; the President of the Liguria Region, Marco Bucci; the current Mayor of Genoa, Pietro Piciocchi; the architect Stefano Boeri; the maestro Remo Anzovino; the spokesperson for the victims’ relatives’ committee, Egle Possetti; the Refect of Genoa, Cinzia Torraco.
Following this, Imam Salah Hussein will lead a prayer and Monsignor Marco Tasca, Archbishop of Genoa, blesses the Memorial. After the official ceremony, the authorities will go to the Memorial for a private visit.
The August 14th 2018 Memorial and the Polcevera Embankment Gardens are part of the “The Polcevera Park and the Red Circle” project, developed by the team led by Stefano Boeri Architetti for the redevelopment of the area around the Morandi Bridge, which collapsed on 14 August 2018.
The places of remembrance, conceived in collaboration with the relatives of the victims of the tragic collapse, are located near the former Pila 9 of the Morandi Bridge, a particularly significant point for the memory of this dramatic event.
The Polcevera Embankment Gardens are conceived as a series of thematic environments in dialogue with the surrounding preexisting structures, creating a continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. The Memorial, a place of mourning and hope, houses both private and collective spaces, including the House of Families and the Bioclimatic Greenhouse, which completes the visitor’s itinerary.
