From 18th to 22th November, the ESP European Conference on ‘Ecosystem Services: One Planet, One Health’ is being held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, in which Luis Pimentel from the Research Department of Stefano Boeri Architetti is participating.
The concept of Ecosystem Services (ES) has gained prominence in recent years as a framework for understanding the benefits that nature provides to human well-being. Similarly, Nature based Solutions (NbS) have emerged as an innovative approach to address the complex challenges of society, biodiversity and well-being in general.
On 18th November, the session ‘Linking Ecosystem Services and Nature-based Solutions for Transformative Change’ will explore the intersection between ES and NbS, focusing on their potential to drive transformative change towards sustainable development in the context of socio-ecological interactions, while meeting human needs.
In this context, Luis Pimentel presents Parco Italia, a proposal by Stefano Boeri Architetti and AlberItalia that takes its inspiration from the broader Green Urban Oases forestation project (developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti together with FAO and other organisations and research institutes, oriented towards the creation of ecological corridors crossing 90 cities from Africa to Central Asia). The declination of this vision in Italy envisages extending urban forestation to the 15 metropolitan areas, allowing them to be connected, through green corridors, with the Apennine ridge and the Alpine system, creating a single large infrastructure along the entire peninsula.
