Michele Masneri writes an article in Il Foglio about the tenth anniversary of the Vertical Forest in Milan (Boeri Studio), completed in 2014 in the Porta Nuova district.

Ten years after its inauguration, the Vertical Forest has not only become one of the most iconic emblems of Milan in the last decade, but is also the protagonist of a volume that traces the entire history of the project, Bosco Verticale. Morphology of a Vertical Forest, edited by Stefano Boeri Architetti, published by Rizzoli – presented on December 2nd 2024 at the Teatro Franco Parenti.

The book retraces the story with an editorial structure that evokes the growth of a tree with its roots, trunk and branches. The roots are the intuition of an innovative idea; the trunk corresponds to the challenges faced in structural, technological and environmental terms, the building site, and the impact of the Vertical Forest on the transformation of the area and the urban landscape; the branches, lastly, are the life of the Vertical Forest: on the one hand its positioning in the international architecture panorama, and on the other hand its independent path as a symbol and catalyst of biodiversity, also in the collective popular imagination.

In ten years, the benefits of the Vertical Forest have been studied down to the smallest detail, ‘even endorsed by the European Space Agency (ESA) […]: it lowers the temperature of the city as well,’ reports Masneri. The Vertical Forest’s vegetal screen, in fact, does not reflect or amplify the sun’s rays, but filters them, generating a welcoming indoor microclimate without harmful effects on the environment; at the same time, the green curtain ‘regulates’ humidity, produces oxygen and absorbs CO2 and fine dust,
