Wonderwoods, developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and MVSA Architects, wins the THE PLAN Award 2024 in the Mixed Use category.
THE PLAN Award is an annual international award for excellence in architecture, interior design, and urban planning, organized by the industry magazine THE PLAN. With 20 thematic categories and over 1,000 projects submitted each year, THE PLAN Award provides an opportunity for architects, designers, urban planners, and developers to contribute to discussions on the most relevant topics in design.
The international jury, together with a public vote, awarded Wonderwoods, the prototype vertical forest developed in Utrecht, as an outstanding project in the mixed-use category.
The Wonderwoods project, featuring two towers (the Vertical Forest designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, connected by a bridge to the other building designed by MVSA Architects), serves as a green oasis in the recently developed Beurskwartier area of Utrecht.
Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is a 105-meter-high urban tower, capable of accommodating about 200 apartments of different types, catering to a variety of residents. It hosts approximately 60 trees, 9,640 shrubs, and 50,000 plants — equivalent to the vegetation in 1 hectare of forest — enhancing biodiversity and providing a livable habitat for citizens as well as other species.
Built using prefabrication techniques for the facades and balcony system, Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is enriched with office areas, fitness and sports spaces, bicycle parking, and public and recreational spaces, becoming a new landmark for the Dutch city.
