Airing on 7 November 2024, in primetime on Italia 1, Stefano Boeri, interviewed by Matteo Viviani, is a guest on Le Iene present: Inside, in the episode entitled ‘Save the Planet’, focusing on the relationship between architecture, nature and the effects of climate change.

The climate crisis has been transforming our planet, making what was once classified as an emergency normal, as witnessed by the floods in Emilia Romagna and Valencia, shown in the segment.

‘We were wrong to build cities that are actually minerals, made of asphalt, cement, glass, iron. Which keep vegetal nature at a distance, or enclose it in parks, gardens. This is a model that, we have realised, no longer works.’ Stefano Boeri explains.

Plants and trees, in fact, must ‘become a fundamental presence everywhere in the life of a city’, as exemplified by the Vertical Forest project in Milan, a complex of two residential towers built in 2014 in the Porta Nuova area, and awarded the title of ‘the world’s best skyscraper’ by CTBUH and then becoming a symbol of the UN’s 11th Sustainable Development Goal.

The first residential building covered with over 700 trees and 20,000 plants, it is a true ‘model of urban forestation’ that has introduced vegetation into architecture as its essential element. ‘Around the Vertical Forest,’ explained the architect, ’there is a significant reduction in temperatures. A benefit for those who live inside the Forest, where air conditioning is hardly ever used in summer, but also in its context’.
