Bosco Verticale, Morphology of a Vertical Forest

On the tenth anniversary of Milan’s Bosco Verticale (Boeri Studio), Rizzoli is publishing BOSCO VERTICALE, Morphology of a Vertical Forest, a comprehensive monograph on the project curated by Stefano Boeri Architetti.

From the outset, the design of the two residential towers, completed in 2014 by Stefano Boeri (Boeri Studio) in Milan’s Porta Nuova district, was visionary, pioneering new frontiers of urban living. By integrating architecture and living nature for the first time in the world, the Bosco Verticale has, over the past decade, been awarded as the world’s best skyscraper and recognized as a symbol of the United Nations’ 11th Sustainable Development Goal.

Curated by Stefano Boeri Architetti, the book traces the history of the project, with a structure that evokes the growth of a tree—from roots to trunk to branches. The roots symbolize the conception of an innovative idea, sparked by creative and artistic inspiration. The trunk corresponds to the project’s genesis, the challenges faced in structural, technological, and environmental terms, the construction phase, and the impact of the Bosco Verticale on urban transformation and the cityscape. The branches represent the ongoing life of the Bosco: on one hand, its position within the context of international architecture, marking a shift towards integrating living nature into the urban environment, and on the other, its journey as an autonomous symbol and catalyst for biodiversity, even within popular collective imagination.

The book includes texts from international authors and scholars (Beatriz Colomina, Emanuele Coccia, Paul Hawken, Vittorio Lingiardi, Manuel Orazi, Matilda van den Bosch, James Wines), complemented by drawings and sketches, exclusive illustrations by comic artist Enrico Pinto, and photographs of the building through various seasons and years, from its construction to today (Laura Cionci, Elisa Galluzzo, Dimitar Harizanov, Giovanni Nardi, Paolo Rosselli), with a new photography portfolio by Iwan Baan created exclusively for this volume.

The book will also be released in the United States in March 2025 by Rizzoli New York.
