Arcipelago Borghi, the new volume from Touring Club Italiano in the Bagaglio di Viaggio series, features a contribution by Stefano Boeri titled The New Capitals of Biodiversity.
The book is divided into three sections: The Essence of Borghi, which introduces the topic of inland areas through brief essays; The Time of Borghi, which conveys the emotions of life in these places through stories, experiences, reports, and graphic novels; and The Space of Borghi, a true guide to discovering 23 locations and their surrounding areas—places that are environmentally conscious, welcoming to visitors, and that offer a sense of well-being. Additionally, 23 exemplary case studies are presented, showcasing how these places, while preserving traditions and customs, have evolved into future-forward laboratories, offering new paths.
Stefano Boeri’s contribution appears in the first section, where he writes: “Revitalizing borghi and addressing their economic and demographic challenges is not merely an aesthetic ambition, tied to the ideal of a genuine life removed from contemporary dynamics. It is, above all, an environmental necessity. Historically, these places have safeguarded vast portions of our natural capital, providing cities with clean air, potable water, and quality food. For this reason, we must recognize the borghi of our inland areas as capitals of biodiversity, crucial nodes in a new development model based on awareness of environmental challenges, ethical mobility, respect for the land, and care for the natural heritage.”
