Urban Oasis in Frame

FRAME magazine features an article titled How sustainable neighbourhoods could pave the way for a greener future, highlighting Stefano Boeri Architetti’s project Urban Oasis in Bratislava.

The article focuses on international sustainable examples that aim not only to have a local impact but also to serve as models for global developments.

The “Urban Oasis” masterplan for Chalupkova, a 3-hectare area in the center of Bratislava, revitalizes the district through a system of residential spaces, green areas, and public functions, with the goal of defining a new core for the city.

Specifically, the masterplan is laid out on a triangular plot of 32,500 square meters and includes five structures—a tower and four medium-density buildings—developed around a new large central public park, open to everyone. A series of paths, open spaces, and communal areas crisscross the park, enriching the area with a new urban landscape accessible to all citizens and enhancing the district’s porosity and permeability.

In the design of the volumes, the buildings feature a variation in height carefully planned to maximize the amount of direct sunlight reaching the park. This design frees up space for terraces—both public and private—intended as recreational spaces and hubs for community engagement.
