On Thursday, March 21st, the University of Padua – Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering – ICEA hosts a presentation by Laura Di Donfrancesco, Project Leader at Stefano Boeri Architetti, titled “Padua: City of Districts – The New Intervention Plan,” delving into the project developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and MATE Società Cooperativa for the Venetian city.
The main theme that guided the drafting of the new Intervention Plan originates from a different perspective compared to past models: the regeneration of the city of Padua, starting from the needs of citizens to improve the quality of urban life.
The heart of the district is the public space, a micro-centrality that in many cases needs to be strengthened: where issues involve the presence of unused or disused areas, the lack of gathering spaces, or the discontinuity of cycling routes, the objectives of the Plan focus on sustainable mobility, reduction of land consumption, urban afforestation, urban quality regeneration, and citizen services. The aim is to build the “15-minute city,” where public green spaces and essential services are positioned within a 15-minute walking radius, accessible to all citizens.
The regeneration of Padua as a city of districts starts precisely from the application of this principle, and the actions of the Intervention Plan aim at containing land consumption, with a 63% decrease compared to the current Plan, and the regeneration of 550,000 square meters of underutilized areas; the enhancement of public transport between districts with 23km of new tram routes, 55 new pedestrian islands, and the creation of a 56km orbital cycling system that does not penalize public and private mobility and, together with afforestation, clearly reconstitutes the city’s boundaries; and the valorization and implementation of the green system.
